Asthma - What is It?

Today, asthma is very common and is increasing all over the world. This chronic health condition can attack any kind of age person. This condition directly impacts lungs. And the fact is there is no cure for this disease. But little change in lifestyle, proper medical treatment, personal awareness can make asthma symptoms very low.

Although the people who got asthma may go a number of days without notice. Asthma effected people generally keep inhaler with them.

Asthma symptoms can be triggered by pollen, dust, pet dander, fumes, or smoke or others. This makes person to start cough, wheeze and have shortness of breath. Sometime pain in chest is also very common. In this process bronchial airways become irritated that makes swelling in the airways, mucus production etc. All these make breathing more and more difficult. This is called asthma attack. Generally asthma attack is minor in nature but it can be dangerous if treatment is not received.

Today, Asthma treatment include medications like inhaler and other short acting medication and long acting medications. Inhalers are used to quickly opening the airways to breathe properly while long acting medications are taken daily to prevent asthma episodes. Although today asthma treatments go beyond medicine to yoga and herbal treatment. People can control the symptoms of asthma by changing their environment and lifestyle.

How To Live And Stay Healthy

We say that it is a doctor's job to treat disease, true enough, but they are not the ones responsible to prevent diseases and keep us healthy. Health depends in our own hands. A writer has realized this thought after going through a blocked coronary artery surgery. After the surgery, he has changed his eating habits and has done successful results to him. His doctor was amazed with the results of his diet. But, what can we do make our life style really healthy? How can we improve our health and our every day life style?

Importance of a healthy diet
It is important to keep a healthy and a balanced diet. This is by having healthy options among the foods that we take. In order to help, the U.S Department of Agriculture has released a food guide pyramid for people to follow.The base of the pyramid, being the biggest part, should contain foods with complex carbohydrates like bread, cereals, rice and pasta. This is the foundation of every meal.

The second layer has two equal parts which contains fruits and vegetables. These are also sources of complex carbohydrates. Your daily meals should be coming from these three food groups.

The third layer has two smaller sections: one has foods like milk, yogurt and cheeses; the other section has meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. Moderate intake should be given to these foods because these contain cholesterol and saturated fats which can cause coronary diseases and cancer.

And at the top layer of the pyramid contains fats, oils and sweets. These foods have very little amount of nutrients and should be taken only once in a while. Foods at the base of the pyramid should be taken the most.

It is better to create your own food variety rather than sticking to what the pyramid states. By experimenting on your food pyramid, you can have different sources of nutrients and fiber.
Nowadays, vegetarian diet has become more popular because it lessens the risk of being obese. Aside from that, it can also prevent constipation, lung cancer and alcoholism. And with some reviews, proper diet even meatless can give the proper nutrients needed by the body.

It is important to keep your dietary fat intake below 30 percent of calories and below 10 percent saturated fat. It does not require you to be a vegetarian to be able to do this.
How to have a healthy diet: As we start with the transformation of your eating habit, one word should always be remembered; "Substitution". You have to substitute all those unhealthy foods that you usually take with healthy and proper foods. Substitute vegetable oil and soft margarine on animal fat, solid shortening and butter. Avoid using palm oil or coconut oil; these are high in saturated fats. Put a boundary with your intake of foods like cakes, cookies, doughnuts and pies; they also contain saturated fats.

Substitute skim or low fat milk for whole milk, margarine instead of butter and low fat cheeses for the regular ones. Instead of ice cream, have a low fat frozen yogurt. Lessen your intake of egg yolks to also decrease consumption of cholesterol.

Meat is in the same section with poultry and fish. However, fish and chicken contains less fat than beef lamb or pork. Avoid processed meats such as bacon, hot dogs, sausage and hamburger because they have high content in saturated fats. Some dietitians say that not more than six ounces a day of lean meat, fish and poultry should be taken. Organ meats like liver should also be limited due to its high content of cholesterol.

Snacks should also be part of the substitution process in obtaining a healthier diet. Instead of having chips, peanuts, cashews, cookies or candies, you can have homemade popcorn, fruits, and vegetables like carrots, celery and broccoli.

Monitor your calorie count
It is better to keep your diet focused on complex carbohydrates rather than high fat foods. With this weight loss is easier to achieve. Remember that grains and vegetables are healthier than meat.

If you want to lose those pounds, you have to consume fewer calories either by eating less or doing some physical exercise. You also have to reduce your calorie intake. Doing all these should give you pounds off your body weight.

When dining out
Fast food has become a craze. But these food places offer foods that are usually high in fat and calories. A hamburger for example, could contain about 525 to 980 calories. Fast foods offer foods that are often fried or with some fattening dressings and cheeses. Eating a lot of these foods could have a great effect on your health.

Some restaurants serve large portions of their food. You need to watch the amount of food that you are consuming. Do not consume the big serving of food at once; you can take them home instead. You can have someone share the large serving with you or you can just order appetizers. Dining out can be very tempting but you have to watch what you eat to have a healthy diet.

A healthy diet for all
A lot goes through obesity, surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and other medical treatments but it is our choice not to go through all of these if we only maintain a healthy and balanced life style.
